It does require some time because of the air drying step, but during that time you can do something else and then come back and finish the rest later. Another option is to start the seasoning process at night, go to sleep and then finish the rest the next day.
- Clean the pestle and mortar with water and a steel brush (steel is ideal but a hard bristle brush will also work).
- Let the mortar and pestle air dry until there is no visible moisture.
- Crush uncooked rice in the bowl until it is fully ground into a powder. You can add a little water to the rice if you are having difficulty grind it.
- Empty the uncooked rice out of the mortar and wipe the bowl with a clean cloth.
- Repeat the rice crushing procedure 2-3 times if you want to ensure you have removed all of the dust from the mortar (this step is optional).
- Season the bowl by crushing a handful of salt, pepper, cumin (or paprika or curry if you want a different color) and a few cloves of garlic in the bowl.
